Winter Is Coming: The Importance of Gates® PolarFlex™ Low-Temperature Hydraulic Hoses

As winter approaches, industries that rely on heavy machinery face unique challenges. Hydraulic system performance can be compromised when temperatures plummet, leading to operational inefficiencies, costly downtime and even equipment failure. To address these issues, Motion offers the Gates PolarFlex line of low-temperature hydraulic hoses, specifically designed to maintain flexibility and reliability in harsh, cold environments.

The Impact of Cold on Hydraulic Hoses

Hydraulic hoses are typically composed of polymers, providing the flexibility needed to channel fluids under high pressure. However, when exposed to low temperatures, these polymers lose their ability to bend and flex. This phenomenon is familiar to anyone who has tried to use a garden hose during the winter; the once-flexible material becomes stiff and almost rigid, making it difficult to maneuver.

In hydraulic systems, this loss of flexibility can be catastrophic. If a hose not designed for low-temperature service is forced to flex, the polymers within the tube and cover compounds may shear rather than bend. This shearing effect can cause cracks and other forms of damage, compromising the integrity of the hose and leading to leaks or complete failure. Such failures can result in unscheduled maintenance, equipment damage and potential safety hazards.

Gates PolarFlex: Engineered for Extreme Conditions

Recognizing the need for reliable hydraulic performance in wintry weather, we proudly offer Gates PolarFlex hydraulic hoses. These hoses are specifically engineered to withstand the rigors of low-temperature service without compromising their structural integrity.

PolarFlex hoses are recommended for high-pressure hydraulic applications where performance, flexibility and ease of routing are critical, even in extremely low temperatures. The temperature range for PolarFlex hoses is -57°C to +100°C (-70°F to +212°F), ensuring they remain functional and flexible in some of the harshest environments on the planet.

Gates PolarFlex hoses are compatible with many hydraulic fluids, including biodegradable options like polyester, polyglycol and vegetable oil, as well as standard petroleum-based fluids. This compatibility ensures that these hoses can be used in various applications, from environmentally sensitive projects to standard industrial operations.

Benefits of Using PolarFlex Hoses

Using Gates PolarFlex hoses in your hydraulic systems during winter offers several key benefits:

1. Enhanced flexibility: PolarFlex hoses maintain their flexibility even in extreme cold, reducing the risk of damage due to bending or flexing.
2. Increased durability: By preventing the shearing of polymers at low temperatures, PolarFlex hoses ensure long-term durability and reliability, minimizing the risk of leaks and failures.
3. Versatile fluid compatibility: PolarFlex hoses are designed to work with various hydraulic fluids, making them suitable for diverse applications.
4. Cost efficiency: The durability and reliability of PolarFlex hoses reduce the need for frequent maintenance and replacements, leading to lower operational costs over time.

When operating hydraulic systems in cold climates, the right equipment can make all the difference. Motion is your trusted source for Gates PolarFlex low-temperature hydraulic hoses. These hoses offer the flexibility, durability and versatility needed to keep machinery running smoothly even in the harshest winter conditions. By choosing PolarFlex, you ensure that your operations remain efficient and safe, regardless of the weather.
